Before he underwent surgery in Union Hospital to have both knees replaced, life was difficult for Ed Bennett. "It was misery to walk," he said. "I couldn't stand. I couldn't go places with my family, and it was hard to ride my motorcycle."

Dr. James McQuillan performed surgeries to replace both of Ed's knees - something he and his partners at Dover Orthopaedics do frequently to help those who are tired of using a cane or a wheelchair and no longer want to live in constant pain. "After surgery, their ability to continue an active lifestyle is amazing," said Dr. McQuillan.

"I have practiced in Union Hospital since 1988, when I moved to Dover," he continued, "and I think Union Hospital does a fantastic job at every level from the nurses, anesthesiologists, aides, physical therapists, cleaning people - everyone. In fact, it's one of the cleanest hospitals I've ever seen, which means a lot to prevent infection."

Shelley White-Luellen says Dr. McQuillan is just one of the top-notch orthopaedic surgeons who have performed more than 500 joint replacements in just the past few years at Union Hospital. "We really enjoy helping our patients and knowing that what we do is going to improve their quality of life," said Shelley, an RN First Assistant in surgeries.

"Three months after my first knee replacement, I was pleased enough to have the second knee done," said Ed. "Everything went well. The therapy was great. I'm extremely happy. In fact, I'm living, walking proof that you can get quality care, close to home at Union Hospital."
