Union Hospital and New Towne Mall will host a free ?See a Smaller Shadow? four-week indoor walking challenge Jan. 9 through Groundhog?s Day, Feb. 2. Participants will be challenged to walk 500 minutes during the four-week event, which is equivalent to walking 30 minutes five days per week.
?We thought it would be fun to tie the challenge in with Groundhog?s Day, when Punxsutawney Phil traditionally steps outside to check his shadow,? said Pam Dummermuth, UH Community Health and Wellness coordinator. ?Why not make it a goal to actually see a smaller shadow by this Groundhog?s Day??
The Challenge kicks off in the mall?s Food Court on Monday, Jan. 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. Union Hospital registered nurses will be on hand with program registration information and will offer free blood pressure screenings, weight, and body measurements. Those unable to attend the kick-off may register by clicking HERE or by calling the UH Community Relations office at (330) 602-0778. Registration packets can also be picked up at New Towne Mall Entrance ?C? outside of Kohl?s department store.
Participants have between Jan. 9 and Feb. 2 to achieve a total of 500 minutes of walking. Walkers may come to the mall or do their walking or walk anywhere they choose.
The event wraps up on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2. Challenge participants can turn in their completed walking record at that time and compare their weight and measurements to those taken at the kick-off. Walkers who have met the 500-minute goal will receive a ?License to Shop? coupon book good for discounts at many mall merchants.
?Walking remains one of the simplest and least expensive physical activities that has a direct, positive impact on a person?s overall health,? said Dummermuth. ?Setting a short-term, realistic goal is a great way to achieve both success and a sense of accomplishment that will encourage you to continue on the path of health and wellness.?
The mall opens its doors one hour prior to regular retail hours throughout the year to anyone who wishes to walk indoors.
