Debra Fair, Union Hospital’s new Maternal/Child Nursing Center Manager overseeing the hospital’s Maternity Care Center, can relate a little bit to new parents and the complete disruption in everyday routines that comes with a baby – including but not limited to sleep patterns.
Fair’s recent change from working midnights for nearly 25 years to her new daytime position in the department where babies are born and spend their first hours, has left her sleepy at times, too.
“I normally am here every day around 6 a.m. so I can visit with staff on both of our shifts, but I can tell a difference from how I was used to working until this change, especially in the afternoons,” she said with a chuckle. “But I enjoy coming to work, especially when you have such a wonderful, dedicated and professional staff, and you see the joy they are taking part in with the families who come to the hospital for their new babies.”
Fair, a registered nurse, manages a staff of 30 nurses and eight support staff that handles the births of around 650 to 700 babies every year at the hospital.
“I get to see the babies in the nursery at times and see the happy moms and dads and that’s very gratifying,” she said. “You can feel it right then why our staff is so dedicated and are so good and focused on their jobs in serving the mothers, babies and their families.”
Fair, who has worked at Union Hospital since 2003, holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Malone University and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix. She and her husband Jerry reside in Dover and will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary later this year and have three adult children and five grandchildren.
