Union Hospital To Host Free Classes For Dealing With Chronic Pain

People who suffer from chronic pain are looking for help in their battle against the afflictions.

People who suffer from chronic pain conditions always are looking for help at the same time they are battling the afflictions.

Two registered nurses at Union Hospital who have been professionally trained in strategies to manage chronic pain and all of the related issues it can produce are available to assist area residents with addressing these concerns. The hospital’s Community Health and Wellness Department will host a free six-week series of classes in February and March to explore the topic.

The “Chronic Pain Self-Management Program” is a workshop developed by Stanford University medical professionals and will be led locally by Union Hospital nurses Deb Angel, RN, and Beth Hoffman, RN. Classes will be held on six consecutive Tuesdays – Feb. 21 and 28, and March 7, 14, 21 and 28 – from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Rosenberry Conference Room located beside the cafeteria at Union Hospital.

A limited number of seats are available for this free program and registration can be made online by visiting the “Health Events” section of the hospital website at www.unionhospital.org, or by calling (330) 602-0779.

The classes will cover the following basic topics:

  • Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, isolation and poor sleep
  • Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance
  • Appropriate use of medications
  • Communicating effectively with family, friends and healthcare professionals
  • Nutrition
  • Pacing activity and rest
  • How to evaluate new treatments

All participants in the class also receive a free copy of the book “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Pain” along with a companion CD courtesy of the Dewey H. and Irene G. Moomaw Foundation.
