UH TECH Career Camps Begin in January

UH TECH students gowned up for mock orthopedic surgery, supervised by Jeremy Shaw, a registered nurse in the Operating Rooms.

The MedFlight helicopter and flight crew visited UH TECH students to demonstrate how critically ill or injured patients are flown from the hospital or accident scenes to medical centers Columbus, Akron or Cleveland for specialized surgery or treatment.

Union Hospital’s Teens Exploring Careers in Healthcare, UH TECH for short, begins its tenth year with the first of four monthly Career Camps at Union Hospital in Dover. This introductory session will be Saturday, January 28 from 10 am to noon.  UH TECH has helped to inspire hundreds of high school students to pursue a career in healthcare according to Holly Ripple, communications coordinator at the hospital.

“The UH TECH Career Program provides local high school students first-hand experience in departments of the hospital, learning from the professionals about their job of caring for patients, the technology they use, and the education needed to enter the field,” Ripple said.

Interested high school students, along with parents, teachers, and guidance counselors are invited to attend this first UH TECH Career Camp.   Ripple says this first of four monthly meetings will look back at previous UH TECH Career Camp programs and what students have learned over the last 10 years.  Students will hear about the hospital’s Teen Volunteer program and then have a tour of the hospital departments to be visited at length in future Career Camps.  A continental breakfast will be provided to those attending.

Following the first Career Camp on January 28, the schedule includes Career Camp meetings on February 11, March 11, and April 8. Each camp is held at Union Hospital in Dover from 8:45 am to noon.

Registration is required to attend UH TECH Career Camps. Call or e-mail Holly Ripple in the UH Community Relations office at (330) 364-0884.  The e-mail address is: hollyr@unionhospital.org.  Career Camp information is also available on the UH TECH Facebook page.  Students may also register for each of the four UH TECH Career Camps on the UH website:  www.unionhospital.org  Click on the “Employment Opportunities” button and then, “Learn About Careers in Healthcare.”

After the final UH TECH Career Program in April graduating seniors will be invited to apply for a $1,000 UH TECH Scholarship award, given annually to a student who plans to continue their education after high school for a healthcare career.
