What’s a good distraction while walking?

How about taking a walk with two physicians from Union Hospital amid the sights and great smells of the Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market.

Union Hospital’s Community Health and Wellness program will host its next “Walk With a Doc” free monthly walking program event at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds at Dover during the weekly Farmers Market.

The walk, which is part of a nationally recognized community walking program, will be led as it is every month by Dr. Aruna Rao, MD, of Union Hospital, along with special guest Dr. Spencer Pinion, a family physician at the office of UPS Central located on the hospital campus.

Walkers will meet at the Cloverleaf Cafe at the fairgrounds and will enjoy a refreshing and rejuvenating walk around the fairgrounds area, enjoy healthy food demonstrations presented by the Union Hospital Nutrition Services staff, and be able to browse the ever-growing Farmers Market. To learn more about the Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market, visit www.tvffm.org.

No registration is required, the event is for walkers of any age and there is absolutely no cost to attend. Healthy snacks and water will be available, and free blood-pressure checks also will be featured.

Dr. Rao, the medical director of the Inpatient Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine services at Union Hospital, also will provide a brief health-related discussion and will be available to answer questions and encourage participants.

Walk With a Doc is a national non-profit organization with a mission to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve the health and well-being of the country. Future walk dates will be announced by the hospital and on the Walk With a Doc website at http://walkwithadoc.org/our-locations/dover-ohio/.

Other healthcare professionals, public officials and others will be part of upcoming walks, which normally will be held the first Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. at locations around the county. The July walk is scheduled on June 2 at 9 a.m. at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia during the annual First Town Days Festival.

Information about Union Hospital and all of its services available to the community is available on the hospital website at www.unionhospital.org, and on the hospital’s pages on Facebook and Twitter (@Union_Hospital).
