Sugarfuse at Dover and Miller’s Creamery of New Philadelphia received the top awards for their chocolate-inspired treats during the Union Hospital Auxiliary’s annual “Chocolate Love A’fair” held at Buckeye Career Center at New Philadelphia.
Sugarfuse’s “Chocolate Bacon Cake” was selected by a panel of “celebrity judges” as the Judges’ Choice winner and the “Cherry Cordial Brownie Truffle” prepared by Miller’s Creamery received the People’s Choice award in voting by those in attendance at the event.
Sugarfuse and Miller’s Creamery were two of the 28 local chefs and bakers who prepared and offered tasty treat samples to the 400 ticketholders during the event, which is a fund-raiser for the UH Auxiliary. All proceeds from the Chocolate Love A’fair are used to buy patient care equipment and improve facilities at Union Hospital.
“I am always amazed by and gracious for the outpouring of support from the participants and the people who buy tickets and enjoy the Chocolate Love A’fair every year,” said Lynn Ballantyne of Dover, who serves as the chair of the event for the UH Auxiliary. “It takes a lot of dedicated volunteers to put on this event, and the Auxiliary and Union Hospital are very grateful to everyone who participated and attended.”
Gift baskets, gift certificates, desserts and other items donated by local restaurants and businesses also were auctioned off during the event through services donated by Rick Keffer Auctions at New Philadelphia.
The celebrity chocolate judges included Jerry Marlowe of Dover, Aaron Hillyer of the First National Bank of Dennison and Union Hospital staff members Carey Gardner and Gene Thorn.
Ticketholders receive one sample dessert from each of the participating exhibitors.
The chocolate-themed desserts and coffees that were offered for sampling were prepared by the following chefs, bakeries and chocolatiers:
