This prestigious award is based on an analysis of patients who received emergency treatment and were admitted for the following:

- Bowel Obstruction
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
- Heart Attack
- Pancreatitis
- Pneumonia

Patient Safety Excellence Award
This award is based on excellence in patient safety indicators as simple as confirming a patient's identity and as complex as verifying the correct medication dosage preventing adverse drug interactions. The findings are drawn from a mandatory annual study.
The following patient safety indicators were evaluated:
- Foreign body left in after procedure
- Death in low mortality Diagnostic Related Groupings (DRGs)
- Pressure ulcer (bed sores)
- Death among surgical inpatients with serious treatable complications (previously known as "failure to rescue")
- Latrogenic Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
- Catheter-related bloodstream infections
- Post-operative hip fracture
- Post-operative hemorrhage or hematoma
- Post-operative physiologic and metabolic derangements
- Post-operative respiratory failure
- Post-operative pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis
- Post-operative sepsis
- Post-operative abdominal wound dehiscence
